What a day! A day of blue skies and sunshine sandwiched between the wind and rain, and an extraordinary day of golf as well! The conditions really were great for golf, not much wind and soft greens although they rolled really well. What I'm leading up to is some great scoring, we had Moloney Jnr coming in with 46 points, including an Albatross on the par 5 16th, drive and a 5 iron that landed on top of the bunker and trickled down into the hole earning himself 6 points on the one hole, I think it was Pete Smith who noted that playing Partner Simon Straker had only scored 5 points on the front nine! Not Simon's best day and the with only 16 points he pipped JP to the wooden spoon!
Not only an Albatross, but also an eagle two on the par 4 14th from Pete Botterill and a two from Tony Fawcett on the 3rd where he hit the ball whilst it was falling off the tee! Second on the day was Stuart Marks with 44 points, who had a great year with two wins and the second at the last event, but only enough to just finish second in the Order of Merit 1 point ahead of David Greetham. The annual honours for the Order of Merit went to Jason Lanely who score 40 points on the day which was good enough for a very steady year of golf, he becomes the first person after 12 years to win the Order of Merit for a second time, and is also Captain for next year.
The battle for Division 2 15+ handicap competition was very competitive, Andy Pryce was leading before the final day with Phil Curl just behind, both had steady rounds on the day with Phil scoring 36 points and Andy 33 points, but coming up from the behind was Matt Barwell who had missed event but 4 good rounds meant he won Division 2, well played Matt.
As is usual at the last event we presented the awards for the day and brought up the winners from the year for a photo. Congratulations to Andy Pryce for the Steve Green award, who on his first year of golf won the Summer Bowl and attended every event this year. Also to Stuart Marks to the Geoff Laney award, presented by Paul Baker for epitomising the qualities of Geoff. And finally the Struggler of the year, which is calculated on the lowest score of 4 events went to Simon Straker, the only way is up Strakes.
After the formalities the drinking carried on into the evening watching England vs USA in the FIFA World Cup, which to be honest was a pretty dull and boring game, but didn;t dampen the good natured debauchery of the Stragglers!
Full results attached, have a great Christmas and see you all in the new year.
