Basingstoke Golf Club
21st April 2011
Yet again it was another 'scorcher' for the second 'Order of Merit' event of 2011, this time at Basingstoke Golf Club. All 34 golfers arrived in good time for the tee, even Codge and Doddy who had coffee at Dummer Golf Club just round the corner!!1
The expectant high scoring didn't materialise and in the end Matt Perry-Lewis came out on top with 36 points on countback from Stuart Marks! Pete Green produced a fine performance with 35 points to take third and take him to the top of the 'High Handicappers' Competition.
'Nearest the pin' went to Martyn Dodd. Big Stick (Dave Greetham) measured in at 290 yards to win the 'Longest Drive' - only JSL can live with that sort of distance but he has to find the fairway first! 'Nearest the Pin in 3' on the difficult par 5 18th went to the 'Finemaster' himself, Paul Reynolds.
Normal service was resumed, with the Wooden Spoon going to the beautiful Welshman himself, Dr John Powell.
A list of full results can be found here (....More details)
Other notable finishes were from Paul Reynolds who, after much boasting, finally finished in the top ten. A return to form for young Chris "Cyril" Rees saw him have his highest finish yet in Stragglers colours.
2010 'Order of Merit' winner, Ed Moloney, once again finished in the high points with a solid display which can't be said for pre-season 'Order of Merit' favourite and holder of the Spring Cup, Mr Andrew "The Dalai Lama" Birch. With his new improved and speedier putting display, Andrew struggled on the back nine which surely puts pay to his chances of winning the 'big one'.
The 'big one' at the moment is led by Matt Perry-Lewis. Matt, who will now be playing off his new handicap of 6, is a few points clear of Stuart Marks in 2nd and Mark Copping in 3rd. David Greetham and Andy Heyes occupy positions 4 and 5. But there is a long long way to go, and something tells us the Irishman who won it last year, Ed "the Eddie" Moloney, wont be going down without a fight.....and who'd wanna fight an Irishman!
Next stop is Salisbury and South Wilts on the 3rd June, which just happens to be young Cyril's Stag Weekend. Mark Mellett will be aiming to defend the Summer Bowl he won last year at Gatton Manor. Further details can be found here - Salisbury and South Wilts.
