Royal Winchester Golf Club
Friday 9th April 2010
The first event of the 2010 'Order of Merit' was held at Royal Winchester Golf Club on Friday 9th April with Andy Birch running out a close winner with a stableford score of 38 points.
Andy was run close by Geoff Laney and Paul Marks, both scoring 37 points, and Ed Moloney and Stuart Marks a further shot back on 36 points.
Captain, Codge Greetham, after two tee shots with dodgy balls, finally got the day underway, playing with fellow Vice Presidents Alan Taylor and Geoff Goater. It was Geoff that had the crowd on their feet with a spectacular drive that ripped up the fairway, making it look oh too easy with a simple par 4.
The highlight of the day had to be the hole in one by Nigel Miller on the very difficult par 3 3rd. Nigel's 5 iron was the perfect shot and with the pin placed at the back of the green, Nigel and his playing partners could see the ball roll all the way to the cup. It was the second hole in one of Nigel's career and, having rung the 'Captain's Bell' in the bar afterwards, only cost him £90.As predicted, Jason Laney won the 'longest drive', with Dave Greetham winning the 'nearest the pin in two' on 18 after his wedge spun back to within 5 feet to make a simple birdie. The 'nearest the pin' was won by Jon Steele with his shot into the 11th rolling up to a little over 2 feet from the pin. The less said about the birdie putt the better, eh Stainless! All in all it was a very enjoyable first event at Royal Winchester and our thanks go to the Club, staff and Club Professional, Steven Hunter, for allowing us to play at such a wonderful club. The food and service was excellent, with Simon Straker beating his previous personal best of 4lbs of red meat in one sitting. At the end of the evening Andy Birch was presented with the Spring Cup by Captain, Codge Greetham. Andy now heads to Gatton Manor in June with a slender lead in the 2010 'Order of Merit'.Those members wishing to play at Gatton Manor should contact Andy Heyes on hampshirestragglers@gmail.com.
